Leaks in air ducts are a problem many residential ventilation systems face. They can happen because of poor installation work or years of stress placed on the ducts. Whatever the reason for leaks to occur in ductwork, it will result in seriously negative effects for comfort and energy efficiency in the home. The U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR program estimates that an HVAC system can lose up to 30% of the air from its heater or air conditioner because of ductwork leaks—and that means a tremendous increase in energy bills with a corresponding plunge in comfort.

How can you take care of trouble with leaking air ducts in your home? First, you need to call on professionals to look over your ducts and find the problems; this isn’t a job you can do on your own. Then you need to let them use advanced tools to make the ducts airtight once more. One of the best current methods is Aeroseal duct sealing. Air Mechanical, Inc. provides this excellent service in the entire Twin Cities Metro Area. Call us when you need duct sealing for your home and let us put this technology to work for you.

How Does Aeroseal Duct Sealing Work?

Aeroseal duct sealing is a patented technique for air duct repair that approaches the problem from the inside of the ducts. Technicians first use special Aeroseal software to measure the loss of pressure from within the ducts. Then they place adhesive polymer particles into the closed–off ventilation system. These particles are drawn toward the air leaks, where they stick to the edge of the holes. The particles also adhere to each other, and they begin to accumulate until they completely seal the hole. When the technicians have finished, they verify that the ducts have been sealed, and will provide you with a Certificate of Completion that shows you your before and after air leak percentage. The whole process takes only a short time, and the new sealing along the ducts should endure for ten years or more.

When to Consider Aeroseal Duct Sealing for Air Duct Repair

You won’t be able to tell on your own if Aeroseal is the best method for closing off air leaks in your ducts. This is a decision to leave to professionals. In some cases, they may decide to use external means, such as mastic and metallic tapes, to seal the leaks. But in cases where they discover multiple spots where air is escaping from the ventilation system, they will probably recommend Aeroseal duct sealing.

You should always watch out for any signs of air leaks in the ventilation system. Some to look for are a drop in airflow from the vents, musty odors in the air, and increases in your heating and air conditioning bills for which you cannot account. Call for professionals, who will determine not only if you have leaky ducts, but how best to address the problem.
