“It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!”
Okay… Maybe it’s also the heat. And what’s worse than a hot and humid day in the Midwest? A hot and humid house because your AC stopped working. Keeping your home cool and comfortable is crucial to surviving Minnesota Summers. That’s why we’ve put together a quick checklist to help troubleshoot your AC issue.
My AC isn’t turning on at all
- Start by checking your electrical panel for a tripped breaker or blown fuse. Resetting the breaker to your AC unit is an easy first step to diagnosing the issue.
- Next, make sure the thermostat is working and set to cool. Set the temperature at least 3 degrees below the ambient room temperature, or it will not turn on.
- Lastly, check the outdoor condenser unit for any damage and listen for clicking, humming, or buzzing sounds—this is a sign that the capacitor has failed and needs to be replaced. It is one of the most common issues we see.
My AC is running but not cooling
- If the unit is turning on, but you’re not getting enough or any cool air in your home, start by checking the thermostat settings and making sure it’s set below the ambient room temperature.
- Next, inspect areas where air flow may be blocked or limited. This includes air filters, registers, and the outdoor compressor. Clogged air filters and buildup on the compressor are often the problem when it comes to restricted airflow.
- Look out for ice on your condenser coil. If your AC is running continuously, your condenser coil is at risk of freezing, causing your unit to malfunction.
- If the problem persists, this may be due to low refrigerant levels or leaks which must be handled by a professional HVAC technician. Call us right away if you notice water leaking from your system, as this can lead to larger issues.
