5 Things To Never Put Down Your Drain

Many of us take our drains for granted. We put a lot of things down our drains and expect that it will all just wash away without a problem. However, there are a number of things that should never be put down the drain. Certain items and substances can lead to significant blockages, which can result in some serious damage if left unattended. The problem with our plumbing systems is that they are hidden away from us, often behind walls or underneath floors. Blockages or leaks usually go unnoticed until they cause significant damage. Your plumbing system is intricate and requires the attention of a trained professional to spot and correct minor issues that could very easily become major. There are many things that you can do to avoid major blockages, one of which is being careful about what you put down your drains.

Never Put These Down Your Drain:

FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease)

Fats, oils, and grease should never go down your kitchen sink because they coat the pipes and create sludge. As these liquids cool, they solidify. Over time, FOG gradually builds up enough to the point where they can block the pipe. This sludge is a major problem because it allows other things to get caught in it.

Flushable Wipes

Although these wipes are marketed as flushable, they can still clog your drain. Wet wipes do not break down as easily as toilet paper does. In fact, the only things that should be flushed down the toilet are toilet paper and waste.

Coffee Grounds

Although coffee grounds might seem small and seemingly harmless, they can stick around in your pipes, leading to clogs!

Eggshells

Many homeowners throw eggshells into their garbage disposal, but small bits of eggshell can get stuck in grease to create a thick substance, which can easily clog your pipes. Plus, the membrane layer of the eggshells has the potential to wrap around the shredder ring of your disposal and cause damage.

Dental Floss, Hair, and Other Stringy Things

Stringy things like floss and hair are not easily flushed down the toilet. When they are flushed, it is likely that they will swirl until they come into contact with FOG or form knots and clumps.

If You Have a Clog:

Unless the clog can be easily be solved with a toilet plunger, do not attempt to handle it yourself. As we stated earlier, plumbing systems are complex. Besides, most of the plumbing tools you can find in your local hardware store are ineffective. One thing you should NEVER put down your drain in an attempt to clear a clog is chemical drain cleaner. These cleaners contain corrosive chemicals that can eat away at your pipes and cause leaks.
